St. Charles looks to build on near upset

LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic will look to build on what might have beenits best performance of the year when it travels to Donaldsonville this week.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.The Comets (1-6 overall, 0-2 in District 9-3A) are coming off a 41-31 loss at home against fourth-ranked St. James Friday night. St. CharlesCatholic used a no-huddle offense for the first time this season and it helped the Comets roll up 351 yards in offense, led by the 175-yard, three-touchdown passing effort of Nick Monica.

Monica, who was 15-of-22 passing, also led the team with 71 yards on 15 carries. Toby Jacobs was the top receiver with six catches for 101 yardsand a touchdown. The Comets were penalized just once and did not commita turnover.

But the Comets were unable to stop a balanced attack by St. James. CoreyWebster passed for 207 yards and ran for 63 as the Wildcats rolled up 460 yards in offense.

While the Comets were falling in an offensive shootout, Donaldsonville was winning an 18-13 defensive battle against Berwick. The teamscombined for a total of 245 yards. Donaldsonville had 153 of them, led bya 99-yard passing effort by Terrance Brown. Brown threw a 7-yardtouchdown pass to Ronnie Jarvis for the winning touchdown in the fourth quarter, capping a comeback from 13-6 down heading into the final 12 minutes. Brown also scored on a 5-yard run. Tony LeBlanc scored theTigers’ other touchdown on a 3-yard run.

Donaldsonville’s defense held Berwick to 94 yards and intercepted two passes.

The non-district victory improved the Tigers to 2-5 overall.

Donaldsonville is 0-1 in District 9-3A after a 27-0 loss against St. Jamestwo weeks ago.

Brown, a junior, was one of the top quarterbacks in the district last year, throwing for over 1,000 yards. Brown will be looking to throw toreceivers Ronnie Jarvis and Edmond Joseph. In the backfield, the Tigersare led by tailback Matt Darville and fullback Mike Lymon.

The team’s strongpoint may be its defensive line. Ends Dustin Schexnayderand Mike Gipson and tackles Ronald Alsay and Terrence Dorsey all return from a year ago. LeBlanc, who led the team in tackles a year ago, returnsat linebacker.

ST. JAMES – E.D. WHITE

ST. JAMES – Fans of the wing-T offense need to head to St. James HighSchool Friday night.

Both St. James and E.D. White run out of the formation. The Wildcats passmore out the T than they have in past years while the Cardinals rely on a bruising running attack. But whatever their methods, both teams havefound success with them this season. St. James takes a 6-1 overall and 2-0 District 9-3A record into the contest while E.D. White enters 5-2 and 0-2.

St. James is coming off an offensive duel with St. Charles Catholic,coming away with a 41-31 victory. Corey Webster completed 11 of his 16passes for 207 yards and four touchdowns and also led the team in rushing with 63 yards on 11 carries. Davin Dennis caught six of those passes for154 yards and two scores. Alvin Bartholomew and Justin Aubert had theother touchdown receptions while Travell Steib scored twice on the ground. The Wildcats finished with 460 yards in total offense.Webster continues to be one of the River Parishes’ leading passers, completing 47 of his 90 passes for 814 yards and 14 touchdowns. Dennisleads the team with 26 catches for 466 yards and seven touchdowns.

E.D. White is coming off a 38-14 loss at home against Lutcher. TheCardinals rushed for 133 yards and had 100 yards through the air but turned the ball over three times. Justin Chiasson led the Cardinals with 75yards on 10 carries.

Chiasson and Jon White have both had 100-yard games for the Cardinals this season. Eric Tate, the team’s second leading rusher last year, alsoreturns. That rushing attack will be going against a St. James defenseallowing under 100 yards per game.

J.J. Tabor, who scored on a 1-yard Friday, is the quarterback and willoperate behind a line led by Marc Montet and Jake Rodrigue. The Cardinals’defense is led by Nick Grabert and Brandon Mackey.

Both teams have outstanding special teams. The Cardinals’ James Wilcoxis one of the top punters in the area in Class 3A. St. James’ AlvinBartholomew has made 21 of 26 extra points and all three of his field goal attempts.

LUTCHER – COVINGTON

LUTCHER – Lutcher will step out of District 9-3A play to host Covington Friday night before preparing for one of its biggest games of the year.

Lutcher (6-1 overall and 2-0 in district play) hosts cross-parish rival St.

James (6-1, 2-0) in a game that could decide the district championship next week.

But before that, the Bulldogs are set to play a Covington team that has gone 5-2 overall and 4-0 in District 6-5A so far this season. It is thesixth time this season that the Bulldogs will play a team from a higher classification. Lutcher is 4-1 in those games.Lutcher is coming off a 38-14 victory over E.D. White in District 9-3Aaction last Friday. Thomas Ricks led the way with 13 completions in 20attempts for 344 yards and three touchdowns. Kenneth Johnson caught sixof those passes for 222 yards and two scores. Damian Ursin added 87yards on the ground as the Bulldogs rolled up 485 yards in offense.

The defense gave up 233 yards in offense but held the Cardinals to one score until late in the game and forced three turnovers. Bernard Rileyreturned a fumble 58 yards for a score.

Ricks has now completed 67 of his 130 passes for 1,180 yards and 10 touchdowns. Johnson has 19 receptions for 568 yards and six touchdownson the season.

Covington is coming off a 31-13 victory over Northshore in District 6-5A action Friday. Brad Fussell threw for 176 yards on 8-of-14 passing andscored on a 1-yard sneak. Lawrence Darby and Kane Penton also hadtouchdown runs. John Marino kicked field goals of 24, 22 and 48 yards. TheLions finished with 307 yards in offense while given up 167, 131 on the ground.

Covington has gone to a more high-powered offense this season, led by Fussell. The line returns four starters from a year ago, led by 290-poundtackles Ricky McIntyre and Ray Spell. The defense is led by Jeremy Garrettwho has made the switch from safety to linebacker.
