HAHNVILLE – A new community is planned for the shores of Lake Salvador in St. Charles Parish, a revitalization of ancient villages which oncestrung out along Bayou Des Allemands and the lake.

Attorney Dale J. Brou, representing Short-Cut Resorts Inc., plans todevelop 103 camp lots in the region of the old Beau Choctaw and the Temple.

Brou told the Planning and Zoning Commission at its Oct. 7 meeting thereare numerous camps in the area and some got together and formed a corporation to purchase the land the camps are built upon.

At present there are 48 camps in the vicinity, and camp owners will not receive parish services, placing them outside existing subdivision regulations.

“It’s never flooded out there,” Brou observed at the St. Charles ParishCouncil meeting Monday. “And there will be no impact to the wetlands.”The 1,010-acre site is only accessible by water, and each camp will have its own sewage treatment equipment.

The council approved a resolution waiving all subdivision regulations which would normally apply.

In another matter, Retired Senior Volunteer Program participant Lena LaCroix of Luling was honored for her 100th birthday at the meeting. Sheis still active as a volunteer at St. Charles Parish Hospital. In other activity, the Parish Council approved the zoning application for a Ryder rental truck sales dealership at 10500 Airline Highway, St. Rose. Property owner Patrick Barthel said the site is presently a junkyard and this would be an asset to himself and to the parish. The business isrelocating from Harahan.

Also, the Parish Council approved a swamp tour operation site in Bayou Gauche, relocating from Fisherman’s Wharf to property owned by Sidney Landry.

Landry has operated the airboat tours at Fisherman’s Wharf. With theapproval of his rezoning application he will move up the bayou to family- owned land. The operation will also include a gift shop and an alcoholicbeverage outlet.

Finally, the Parish Council approved the purchase of a 55,000-square-foot site near Charlestowne Subdivision for the new St. Rose branch of the St.Charles Parish Library.

Price of the land was $116,000, and nearby acreage may come available for possible expansion.

“This is a good purchase which will serve our needs for several years to come,” Parish President Chris Tregre commented.

Finally, a jack-and-bore planned near Fashion Plantation Estates was voted down in a 7-1 vote after objections were raised that it would enhance private development of the subdivision and that other drainage concerns in St. Rose should take precedence.Voting in favor was Councilman Barry Minnich. Councilman G. “Ram”Ramchandran was absent, recovering from surgery.
