Lady Comets sweep Lady Cats, Central Lafourche

LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic stayed hot over the weekend, sweepingEast St. John and Central Lafourche in the first two games of the St.Charles Catholic Tournament.

St. Charles Catholic opened the tournament with a 15-3, 15-5 victory overEast St. John before defeating Central Lafourche, 15-2, 15-7. In other action, Destrehan defeated East St. John, 15-3, 15-12. In the first game of the tournament, played in the Comet gym, St. CharlesCatholic jumped out to a 4-0 lead on two aces apiece by Sarah Weber and Nicole Scontrino. A dink by Marci Martin and two aces by Heather Heltzincreased the lead to 8-0 before East St. John called a timeout. After thebreak, Heltz delivered another ace and Cristin Clement got a dink to make it 11-0.

East St. John broke through with Artrena Radcliffe serving on two LadyComet errors and a downball by Takiyah Joseph. St. Charles Catholic cameback on its next serve with Clement delivering two aces to make it 13-3.

A serve later, Martin served another ace for the game winner. The LadyComets finished with 10 aces in the game.

East St. John opened the second game with consecutive aces by JennieDebowes to take a 2-0 lead. St. Charles Catholic responded on its nextserve with a kill by Scontrino and consecutive aces by Weber. A kill byScontrino and two more aces by Weber built the lead to 6-2.

The Lady Cats pulled to within three on a block by Bethany Condull.

Scontrino followed with consecutive aces on her next serve to build the lead back to 8-3. Two aces by each side made it a 10-5 game beforeMonica Arcuri delivered another ace. After a timeout, an ace by Arcuri andwide tip by the Lady Cats gave the Lady Comets the match winner.

Weber had a game-high five aces as the Lady Comets finished with 18 aces. Katie Arcuri and Scontrino each had three kills with Arcuri providingtop defense. Martin had one dig and five assists.For East St. John, Debowes had two aces and one kill along with Condulland also provided top defense.

Central Lafourche jumped out to a 2-0 lead against St. Charles Catholic inthe tournament’s second match behind a block by Charity Beard.

The Lady Comets responded on their first serve with two aces by Weber, a kill by Scontrino and blocks by Heltz and Clement to take a 4-2 lead.

Clement added a dink and a kill and Weber served another ace to make it 7- 2. Martin would close out the game with three aces.The Lady Comets kept up the momentum in the second game, taking a 5-0 lead on five Central Lafourche errors. Central Lafourche pulled to within6-3 on a block by Brandi Chauvin before an ace by Clement made it a five point game again. The Trojans again rallied, closing to within 8-7 on adink by Beard and two Lady Comet errors.

St. Charles Catholic closed out the match on a 7-0 run. Five straighterrors by Central Lafourche and an ace by Katie Arcuri made it 14-7 with an error by the Trojans giving the Lady Comets the match winner.

Martin led the Lady Comets with two aces and four assists. Clement had ateam-high three kills, two blocks and a dig.

In the third game of the tournament, Destrehan took a 3-1 lead over district rival East St. John on an ace by Terri August. A kill by QuininaSinceno and an ace by Atina Porter built the lead to 7-1 before East St.

John used a timeout. The lead grew to 10-1 after the break on an ace byPorter and a Lady Cat error.

East St. John pulled to within 10-3 on a dink and an ace by Debowes. ButDestrehan closed out the game two serves later on a kill by Porter and four straight aces by August.

East St. John took a 2-0 lead in the second game behind an ace by TheresaCambre. Destrehan came back two serves later to take a 4-2 lead behindtwo aces by Porter. East St. John tied the game on an ace by Joseph and aDestrehan error. Destrehan pulled away behind four straight aces by JanChauvin to take an 8-4 lead.

East St. John regained the lead two serves later. An ace and threeDestrehan errors pulled the game even. An error gave the Lady Cats thelead and Danielle Washington increased it to 10-8 on a kill to the back line.

Destrehan tied the game once again on its next two serves on an ace by August and a block by Kimberly Bierman. Consecutive aces by KatherineKain gave Destrehan a 12-10 lead. After two East St. John errors made it14-10, the Lady cats pulled to within 14-12 on an ace by Cambre and a Destrehan error. But Destrehan got the match winner on its next serve onan East St. John error.August had a match-high nine aces for Destrehan. Chauvin added threekills and four digs and provided top defense. Erica Bierman contributednine assists and a block.

East St. John was led by Washington who had two kills, two digs andprovided top defense. Cambre had two aces and two digs while Josephcontributed four blocks.
