LULING – Callers at the St. Charles Parish School Board headquarters havebeen greeted and charmed with the lilting tones of Lutie Verda, who has operated the front desk/switchboard for 20 years.
That ended last week with her retirement.
Verda, a native of Des Allemands and resident of Luling for more than 30 years, officially leaves employment at the end of 1999, but with accumulated vacation and sick leave she decided to leave early.
“I won’t miss the work, but I’ll miss the people,” she said, smiling sweetly. “I’ve got my 20 years in, and I’m ready to go.”Visitors and phone callers to the office were always greeted with her characteristic Louisiana charm and a ready smile, presenting an image of friendliness and competence.
“They’ve already asked me to substitute, but I said give me at least a year!” Co-workers and her many friends gave her a surprise farewell party Friday.
Verda was hired in 1979 when the School Board was headquartered at its old office on Ellington Drive. She retained her position when the newheadquarters opened in the shadow of the Hale Boggs Bridge, coordinating the daily flood of phone calls and visitors.
Now, her plans include travel, relaxation and keeping up with her husband, Leon, who retired from Cytec at the end of September.
“I’ve got a ‘honey-do’ list this long,” she said smiling.
