Locals shine on college gridiron this past week

LAPLACE – Local athletes made their presence felt in college games across the country last weekend.
In Baton Rouge Saturday, Destrehan graduate Rondell Mealey was rushing for 158 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries in LSU’s 29-21 victory over San Jose State. Mealey, taking the place of Kevin Faulk as the Tigers’No. 1 running back, gave LSU a 7-0 lead in the first quarter by sweepingaround the right side for a 27-yard touchdown.
On LSU’s first possession of the second half, Mealey went down the sidelines for a 39-yard score to make it 23-7. He would also catch a passfor 12 yards and fumble twice, losing one.
At the Bluffs, East St. John’s T.J. Sutherland caught three passes for 49yards in Northwestern State’s 20-13 loss to Southern. Sutherland also hada tackle.
For Southern, Lutcher’s Bradley Pittman had three unassisted tackles. St.James’ Kenric Batiste and Lutcher’s Lonnie Clayton helped the Jaguars rush for 179 yards in the game.
In Annapolis, Md., East St. John alum Kerry Watkins caught two passes for16 yards and a touchdown in No. 10 Georgia Tech’s 49-14 victory overNavy.
Watkins made a diving catch in the end zone of a 6-yard pass from Joe Hamilton to give the Yellow Jackets a 21-7 lead with 10:31 left in the second quarter. Watkins also ran once for seven yards.Watkin’s East St. John teammate Greg Gathers, a true freshman, made hisfirst start with the Yellow Jackets against the Midshipmen. Gathers wasin on nine tackles, including two sacks and three behind the line.
In Monroe, Hahnville’s Kendall Joseph rushed seven times for 36 yards, a 5.1 average, in Nicholls State’s 27-10 loss to Louisiana-Monroe. Josephalso caught two passes for 13 yards.
The River Parishes were in the spotlight again Monday in Southern Mississippi’s 48-14 victory over Tulane.
For Southern Miss, East St. John grad DeQuincy Scott made three tackles,two unassisted.
For the Green Wave, East St. John’s Ky Joseph made six tackles, fiveunassisted, and intercepted a pass in his first start at cornerback. MeldonBarnes of St. James also had six tackles, five unassisted. St. James’Derrick Elzy also had a tackle.
St. Charles Catholic’s Casey Roussel punted seven times for 291 yards, a41.6 average, with a long of 49 yards. And the referee for the contest wasRg Detillier of LaPlace.
