GEOFFREY MICHEL / L’Observateur / September 1, 1999

A few years ago, my mom got the dreadful news that she had leukemia. Mysisters and I did not know how serious the situation was, but we were sad because Mom was going away to Houston, Texas, for treatment.

Knowing that my dad was going with my mom to Houston, my Uncle Matt and Aunt Monica, already with three kids of their own, including a baby, took me and my three sisters in to live with them. At the time, I was 7, and my sisters’ ageswere 9, 3, and 1.

Others helped, but she was primarily responsible. There must have been timeswhen my cousins were jealous because they had to share their mom with us. Shetook us in as her own, having to listen to me tell her all about basketball, with a smile on her face. Every day must have been an adventure. I never once heard anegative word while we were there.

I feel that she sacrificed a lot to make sure we were comfortable there.

Matthew 10:42 says, “And if anyone gives even a cup of cold water to one of these little ones because he is my disciple, I tell you the truth, he will certainly not lose his reward.” Aunt Monica gave us so much more than a cup ofcold water. I always feel as if I owe them “big time.” They are not only a goodaunt and uncle, but also great people. Thanks, Uncle Matt and Aunt Monica, foreverything that you have done for me.
