St. Charles voters approve millage renewals

HAHNVILLE – Barely 8 percent of St. Charles Parish voters approved twomillage renewal items on Saturday’s ballot.

The first ballot issue, for renewal of a 10-year fire protection fund of 1.58 mills, was approved 85 to 15 percent, with vote totals of 1,833 forand 333 against.

The second ballot issue, for renewal of a 10-year road maintenance fund of 5.96 mills, was approved 81 to 19 percent, with vote totals of 1,656for and 402 against.

St. Charles Parish Clerk of Court Charles Oubre Jr. said the turnout of2,166 voters represented only 8 percent of the 29,954 registered voters in the parish.

Parish administrative officer Timothy Vial said this is the first renewal of the fire protection millage, first approved by voters in 1988. He addedthe road maintenance millage was first approved in the early 1900s.

The current millages will be collected for 1999, but the authorization expires in 2000.
