St. James Council settles dispute over engineering contract out of court

VACHERIE – St. James Parish Council voted Wednesday, after an executivesession, to settle a lawsuit with N-Y and Associates over a disputed contract.

N-Y and Associates earlier argued they had an engineering contract with the parish toward the parish-wide sewerage installation project. Theparish asserted the contact was invalid.

As a result of the closed-door discussion with attorneys for N-Y, the council announced the settlement. In the terms of the agreement, N-Yagreed the contract was voided, but they received a new engineering contract for the planned West Bank Library.

Parish President Dale Hymel Jr., instead of his usual remarks, provided thecouncil with the annual audit presentation. It was disclosed that the networth of the parish government’s assets climbed from $60 million to $64 million, including the fund balance, contributed capital, general and fixed assets and retained earnings.

The St. James Parish Hospital, as part of their annual report, announcedtheir recent certification, with their 99 of 100 percent accreditation ranking, which makes the facility among the top 4 percent of rural hospitals in America.

In other activity, the St. James Council – Thanked Shintech for their $250,000 donation toward job skills education.

Re-appointed Wendy Peytavin to the Economic Development Commission.

Voted to support the re-designation of U.S. 90 as Interstate 49, betweenLafayette and New Orleans.

Approved the swapping of Louisiana Enterprise Zones with the Town of Lutcher toward a new funeral home to be located on Louisiana Highway 3125.
