RESERVE – Two students were recognized for special achievement before the St. John Parish School Board on May 20. Melanie Grows and Nicole Edlerare students of the talented visual arts program at East St. John HighSchool. Each was given a certificate of achievement for original artworkpromoting St. John the Baptist Parish public schools in a positive andentertaining way.
“The students and I were approached by the school board office and asked to see what we could create,” said East John art teacher Janine Ward.
“We were told that the artwork must clearly depict St. John Parish, makea positive statement about public education, be reproducible in publications and be able to stand the test of time.”Cleveland Farlough, Superintendent of Schools, explained, “We wanted an original piece of artwork which we could include in publications and literature. We especially wanted our students to do it. Most students inthe two art classes took the challenge and several creative entries were made. The design produced by Melanie Grows will be featured in anupcoming informational brochure. Both designs will find uses in thecoming year.”Grows’ design shows two students with positive attitudes, and an interesting montage of school images dancing with the state of Louisiana across the open pages of a book. It carries the theme, “St. John ParishPublic Schools, Building the Future.””Melanie definitely fulfilled all the requirements that we asked for. Anumber of students did so, but hers was creative and well executed,” said Randy Smith, School Board information coordinator.
Edler’s design features a crawfish teacher and student, and another student who happens to be Andouille.
“Nicole’s artwork was especially fun,” said Smith. “Tacked to the wallsabove the craw-teacher’s head are lists of local attractions and menus.
“Both of these students demonstrated clever imaginations, polished art skills and willingness to tackle a challenge.”
