Hahnville’s Bethencourt selected all-State

BATON ROUGE – Hahnville’s Keania Bethencourt capped a memorable senior season this past week by being named to the Louisiana Sports Writers Association’s Class 5A all-State honorable mention girls’ basketball team.
Bethencourt, L’Observateur’s River Parishes MVP, helped lead the Lady Tigers to their first playoff appearance in the 1990s this past season. Thesenior guard led Hahnville with 15.9 points and 8.1 assists per game. Shealso averaged 4.9 steals in being named to the all-District 6-5A team.Hahnville coach Earl Oestriecher was considered for Coach of the Year.
Oestriecher, L’Observateur’s River Parishes Coach of the Year, turned around a program that went 10-19 in 1997-98, guiding the Lady Tigers to a 24-11 record and an appearance in the state regional playoffs.
Ouachita’s Robert Mitcham received the award for leading his team to the state championship game against Southwood.
Southwood’s Alana Beard was selected as the Class 5A girls’ MVP after averaging 25.9 points and 9.4 rebounds per game in leading her team to itsthird straight state championship. Joining Beard on the all-State firstteam was Istrouma’s LaKeisha Johnson, Bonnabel’s Tamekia Johnson, Salmen’s Natalie Walsh and Airline’s Detra Ashley.
Clarence Moore of state runner-up South Lafourche, was the boys’ MVP.
Moore averaged 22.1 points and 9.7 rebounds per game. Glen Oaks’ HarveyAdger was named the Coach of the Year.
Joining Moore on the first team were Slidell’s Torris Bright, Salmen’s Chris Duhon, Jesuit’s Brandon Spann and St. Augustine’s Hollis Price.The boys’ second team consisted of Ouachita’s Ulysses Jenkins, Terrebonne’s Brandon Brown, South Lafourche’s Ross Chouest, Zachary’s Kedrick Brown and Woodlawn-Shreveport’s Zach Johnson.
