Cancienne, hitting lead Hahnville

DESTREHAN – A five-run second inning and the pitching of Fallon Cancienne helped the Hahnville Lady Tigers to a 9-5 victory over cross-parish rival Destrehan in District 6-5A action Saturday afternoon at the East Bank Bridge Park.
Neither team could mount a threat in the first inning. Hahnville’s turncame in the second as Tyna Wells walked. Fallon Cancienne then beat out abunt, putting runners at first and second. Lyndsey Yochim reached as herfly ball to center fell in, loading the bases for Erin Wheeler with one out.
Wheeler drove a shot to second with Wells beating Anna Glore’s throw to the plate, giving the Lady Tigers a 1-0 lead. Erin Crisham followed with adouble to left, bringing home two runs. After Kelly Landeche reached on anerror and Melanie Delaune added a two-run double to left, making it 5-0, Destrehan starting pitcher Kim Bierman made a back-handed stab to end the inning.
After Cancienne retired the Lady Cats in the second, she led off the top of the third with a double just past the out-stretch glove of center fielder Danielle White. Jackie Witmer then beat out a bunt, putting runners at thecorners. One out later, Wheeler reached on an error to make it 6-0.Hahnville added a run in the fifth as Jennifer Matthews led off by dropping a single into short left field. Cancienne reached on an infield grounder andWitmer grounded to second, scoring Matthews to make it 7-0.
In the sixth, White and Bierman walked and advanced to second on an out.
Jennifer Eskine then stepped in and lined an inside pitch to left for a double, scoring White and Bierman. Eskine was tagged out going to thirdbut the Lady Cats had cut the deficit to 7-2.
Dixi Dufrene reached on a pop up in front of the plate in the seventh for the Lady Tigers and came in to score as Cancienne blasted a shot of the wall in left field. With two outs, Kelly Watson lined a shot to the wall incenter for a double, bringing in another run to make it 9-2.
Destrehan had the last shot in the bottom of the inning. With one out,Gretchen Driscoll walked and stole second and third. Emily Eoff thenwalked and attempted to steal second, getting in a run-down to score Driscoll. Eoff got back to first safely on an errant throw. One out later, White lined a hard single up the middle, scoring Eoff to make it 9-4. After Bierman walked, Holly Gagliano drove a shot to the wallin center field for a double and another run. Cancienne then got the lastout on a grounder to short.
Hahnville improved to 13-6 overall and 8-1 in district play with the win.
The Lady Tigers will travel to Central Lafourche tomorrow.
Destrehan fell to 12-7 overall and 4-5 in District 6-5A play.
