VACHERIE – More efficient trash collection is the goal of a move by Waste Management of Raceland for St. James Parish, the Parish Council was toldWednesday.
A redesign of the collection routes should cut collection time and also cut the need for one of the three trucks currently used. The move will affect2,000 residences in St. James Parish and will go into effect Nov. 1.Parish President Dale Hymel Jr. commented, as a side effect to the studywhich resulted in the new collection routes, that the parish gained 594 more homes in the past six years, reflecting the parish’s population and developmental growth.
The parish contract with Waste Management, now in its sixth year, will be up for re-negotiation next year, Hymel added.
In other activity, the Parish Council approved the purchase of a 1989 marsh buggy from the Lafourche Levee District, which will be used to help clear drainage canals.
Cost of the marsh buggy, Hymel said, is $21,000.
Also, the Parish Council voted to support Pornography Awareness Week this week, at the request of the Catholic Daughters of America.
Finally, the parish will advertise to buy one vehicle each for the Head Start program and the Utilities Department. Bid openings will be held Nov.13.
