Hahnville, Holy Cross square off in Superdome

HAHNVILLE – Hahnville, coming off an unexpected off week, will play in the stadium Friday night where it hopes to end its season – the Louisiana Superdome.
Hahnville plays Holy Cross there in the Hap Glaudi Superdome Classic Friday night. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Hahnville had its game against West Jefferson Friday canceled due to rains caused by Tropical Storm Frances. The Tigers had opened theirseason with a 14-6 victory over Sarah Reed. The Tiger defense helped keythe victory, setting up a touchdown by tackling the punter on the 3-yard line and scoring the second as Greg Becnel recovered a fumble in the end zone. The Tigers also forced Sarah Reed to throw incomplete on fourthdown inside the Hahnville 20-yard line late in the game and forced four turnovers.
Rafael Joseph finished the game with 103 yards. Darryl Honor scored thefirst points on a 3-yard run and rushed for 78 yards overall.
Holy Cross (0-2) is coming off a 33-13 loss at Lutcher. Kevin Preau had atouchdown pass to Bobby Henderson in the loss.
Holy Cross opened the season with a heartbreaking loss to Bonnabel. HolyCross led 19-13 but the Bruins scored late to pull out the victory. Preauran for two touchdowns and passed for another, completing 10 of his 18 passes for 149 yards.
Holy Cross is being led this season by first-year coach Scott Bairnsfather.
Like Hahnville, Holy Cross has a strong defense, led by its defensive line.
Senior defensive ends Matt Dabdoub and Marc Griffen-Hagan return as does senior linebacker Lou Lanza and defensive back Neil Ponstein. Theoffensive line, led by junior Larry Willis, is inexperienced.
Hahnville defeated Holy Cross, 39-7, in the third week of 1997. Thedefense led the way as Karon Champagne picked up a fumble and returned it 10 yards for a score.
Antoine Williams threw for two touchdowns and ran for one and Joseph rushed for 101 yards and scored three times. Holy Cross scored on a passfrom Preau to Kayne LaGraize.
Hahnville opens District 6-5A action next Friday at home against H.L.Bourgeois. Holy Cross begins play in District 9-5A at Jesuit.
