LAPLACE – A Metairie woman suffered fatal injuries after the car in which she was a passenger was struck head-on Tuesday afternoon on Interstate 10.

Trooper Willie Verret reported that Sylvia A. Rzeszutek, 52, 1123 EastWilliam David St., Metairie, was a passenger in a 1993 Nissan Maximadriven by Jan Rzeszutek, 55.

A 1989 Honda Prelude, driven by Kenneth Jackson, 31, 3432 Fort Myers Ave., Baton Rouge, was westbound on I-10 when his right rear tire blewout.

Jackson veered out of control, traveled through the grassy median near the Belle Terre Boulevard interchange and struck the Rzeszutek vehicle head- on.

Both vehicles sustained heavy damage. Jackson was transported to RiverParishes Hospital, LaPlace, in good condition. The Rzeszuteks wereextracted from their vehicle and transported, both in critical condition, to River Parishes Hospital, but Sylvia Rzeszutek was pronounced dead upon arrival at 3:45 p.m. by Assistant Coroner Dr. Wayne Robicheaux.Eastbound traffic was snarled for hours, but westbound traffic was unaffected.
