LAPLACE – More than 300 animals were vaccinated last weekend at the annual St. John Parish Animal Rabies Vaccination Campaign held on March 8.

There were eight locations across St. John the Baptist Parish to which residents were able to bring their pets for the $8 rabies vaccine. The vaccination campaign was sponsored by the St. John Parish Health Unit and Riverlands Animal Hospital.

Dr. Joseph Garon Jr., the veterinarian administering the shots during the campaign, said the same vaccine given during normal operating hours at Riverlands Animal Hospital is approximately $14.

“Many of the people attending the campaign have multiple pets, therefore savings for the rabies vaccine may add up,” Garon said. “Most importantly, it allows the residents of St. John Parish easy access at a discounted rate to keep their pets protected against rabies.”

Garon added that people, as well as animals, are susceptible to rabies and by residents vaccinating their pets they are also protecting their families and neighbors.
