LAPLACE — Each night, more than 30,000 Christmas lights dance to the sound of holiday music at 1801 Acadia Drive in the Riverlands subdivision of LaPlace.
The Blystone/Peterson and Robertson families invite the community to dress their kids in pajamas, throw hot chocolate in a thermos, set the car radio to 99.9 FM and enjoy a spectacular 30- to 45-minute light show.
The light show runs every night from 6 to 10 p.m., weather permitting, and will not run in the rain.
Coordinated by Tiffany Blystone and her brother, Joshua Robertson, the light show has been running each Christmas for the past five years and was inspired by fond childhood memories of riding around neighborhoods to admire sparkling Christmas lights.
Blystone’s sons, Mikkal, 16, and Ashtyn, 8, were another inspiration for the show.
Both boys are on the autism spectrum, and Blystone said they love the lights and decorations that come along with the holidays.
“When our lights come on and sparkle to the sounds of the music, their eyes just light up every time,” Blystone said. “It’s priceless. We do it for the kids, for all the kids. We do it to keep the magic of Christmas alive.”
The light show grows every year with new songs and additions to maintain community interest, according to Blystone.
“Over the past few years, our display has evolved to the point where we feel it should be shared with everyone and used to inspire and inform others about the joy of giving,” Blystone said.
Blystone said light show visitors are welcome to tag #LightsOnAcadia in Facebook and Instagram posts to help spread the word.
It takes several weeks to program every light bulb to sync to the beat of music, according to Blystone, but if anyone asks, it’s done by Christmas magic.
Families have left notes of appreciation, Christmas drawings and Letters to Santa in Blystone’s mailbox, while others have asked if she is collecting donations.
Blystone asks those who enjoyed the lights to consider donating to the St. John Parish Young Marines, a nonprofit organization dedicated to strengthening the lives of youth in St. John the Baptist Parish.
Funding for Young Marines comes solely from donations and fundraisers, and contributions go toward purchasing uniforms and equipment.
