Michel: Faith beyond understanding guides you on God’s path

Monday nights at my house are Family Dinner. It’s the one day that I (usually) cook and invite my kids and grandkids for dinner. Don’t be impressed. Lately, hot dogs (grilled by my husband) have been the default dinner.

No one must mind because they keep coming back. Maybe they’re just hoping that I get tired of hot dogs.

Last week I declined my daughter Monique’s offer to bring something. So instead of bringing dessert, she brought a child with a question. Earlier her 4-year-old daughter Olivia asked, “How could Jesus be on the cross and God be in Heaven if they are the same person?”

“Ask Lolli, she’ll know,” Monique said.

I’m Lolli and although I wasn’t sure how to explain it, I tried.

“Actually, it’s not just God and Jesus who are one. The Holy Spirit is part of the Trinity, too,” I began, and further confused the child.

“It’s like an egg,” I continued. “You have a shell, the egg white and the yolk. There are three different parts that make up one egg.”

Olivia didn’t speak. Nor did she move. She just stood there, then ran off to play with her cousin.

Later, as I thought of Olivia’s question, and a few of my own, I remembered that God never told us to understand everything, He told us to have faith and trust Him.

Proverbs 3:5,6 explains it best, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.”

I think I’ll use that scripture for Olivia’s next question.
