LAPLACE — A LaPlace homeowner shot and killed an intruder Tuesday night, police said, after the assailant charged into the home.
According to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff’s Office, the homeowner was not arrested based on statements proved to authorities, a witness, physical evidence and video footage from the scene.
St. John Sheriff’s Office detectives began investigating the shooting at approximately 8 p.m. Tuesday, when deputies responded to the home in the 3000 block of Cambridge Drive in LaPlace.
Upon arrival, deputies made contact with a male who had just shot an intruder, later identified as Kalvin Ferrygood, 27, of Garyville, inside his home.
Police said the homeowner opened the back door after hearing voices in the backyard, at which time Ferrygood made entry into the house and was shot.
Deputies and firefighters administered aid on scene, police said.
Shortly after, emergency medical services arrived and brought Ferrygood to a New Orleans hospital, where he died.
