Keller: Football trivia worth remembering

As the national football league opens its 2017 season, football fans throughout America are excited, hoping their favorite team might win the Super Bowl and become world champions.

Personally, I don’t have a favorite team, but I do enjoy watching a few games and following individual players and their progress as professionals.

During this season, it’s impossible to visit any coffee shop without the main discussion being about what happened in football the past weekend. Athletics have become so important in our everyday lives that I’m getting a little tired of it.

When I do get involved in football conversations, I often ask one question of those who follow the sport and think they know everything.

“Which two players were selected NFL Rookies of the Year and came from the same town? They also attended the same grammar school and high school, played four years at major colleges and signed professional contracts at age 21.”

That usually ends the discussion about how much everyone knows.

The answer is A.J. Duhe of the Miami Dolphins and Louis Lipps of the Pittsburgh Steelers. Both are from Reserve, lived only 100 yards from each other and were considered the best first year players in the NFL.

A.J. attended LSU and Louis played at the University of Southern Mississippi.

A.J. now lives in Florida and Louis works for the Pittsburgh Steelers.
