RESERVE – In recognition of February being American Heart Month, River Parishes Hospital in LaPlace recently hosted a special healthy-heart event.

The 67 participants were able to receive free blood pressure screenings in the hospital cafeteria.  After the screening, attendees received a card that detailed other screenings they should regularly receive, including a cholesterol screening, blood sugar checks and body mass index rates.

Participants received a free pedometer and heart-healthy recipes. Door prizes from local heath and fitness centers were also given out.

A heart-healthy meal of roasted vegetables, citrus tilapia with fruit salsa and strawberry angel food dream cake was sold in the cafeteria for a $5 donation to the American Heart Association.
