LAPLACE — St. John the Baptist Parish officials say they are in contact with the National Weather Service and the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness actively monitoring a low pressure system moving through the Bahamas, “Invest 99L.”

The system is showing a great deal of uncertainty with development and possible track. Currently, weather models demonstrate conditions conducive for a 40 percent chance of development into a tropical system over two days and 70 percent chance of development over five days.

Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are expected in our area through the weekend into the beginning of next week. Although organized severe weather is not predicted currently, any additional rainfall or heavy downpours will contribute to already saturated grounds and street flooding in low-lying areas.

Residents should stay engaged to news, weather and communication outlets as the forecasts continue to change and get a game plan in the event the system threatens the Gulf Coast. There are numerous resources residents can visit for assistance with storm planning including sjbparish.com, getagameplan.org, noaa.gov/prepare and ready.gov/hurricanes.

Residents should take several measures now to prepare for potential tropical activity:

• Assemble an emergency supply kit that includes essential documents, supplies and provisions.
• Review hurricane evacuation maps, and select a route for you and your family.
• Plan how all family members and pets will evacuate safely.
