LAPLACE — More than 23,000 meals were served this summer in St. John the Baptist Parish as part of the annual Summer Feeding Program.
Parish President Natalie Robottom said the Summer Feeding Program ensures local children have access to healthy and nutritious meals when school is not in session.
Robottom and members of her Administrative staff served lunch to local youth last week at LaPlace Elementary School to close out the successful effort.
“It was satisfying to see the smiles on the children’s faces as they moved through the service line,” Robottom said. “This program is truly about giving our youth a safe and enriching place to go during the summer months.”
Funded by the United States Department of Agriculture, program facilitators served meals to children involved in Parish summer camps, sports camps and local church camps.
The Summer Feeding Program also works as a partnership between the public school system and parish to provide meals for 18 weeks to children 18 years and younger who reside in St. John the Baptist Parish.
Organizers said meals served included 2,916 for breakfast and 20,540 for lunch.
