RESERVE — St. John the Baptist Parish is hosting a one-day STEM (Science, Technology, Engineer and Math) workshop for parish youth this month featuring Dr. Calvin Mackie.

The event takes place from noon to 3:30 p.m. July 11 at REGALA Gym.

Mackie, a New Orleans native and former Tulane University engineering professor, founded STEM NOLA to expose, inspire and engage young people to the opportunities in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).

Participants are exposed to modern communication, collaboration and critical thinking skills through doing project-based and hands-on learning activities.

Pre-registration is required, and those ages 5-14 are invited to attend.

Registration is $35, and the first 100 to register early receive a $25 sponsorship from the United Way Foundation.

For more information, contact the St. John Parks and Recreation Department at 985-652-9569, ext. 1241 or 1168.
