LAPLACE — Sheriff Mike Tregre welcomed fifth grader Matthew Schexnayder Wednesday as Sheriff for a Day in St. John the Baptist Parish.

Matthew, of St. Joan of Arc School in LaPlace, was the top bidder for Sheriff for a Day in the SJA fair’s auction.

Tregre, along with several fellow officers, reported to the school first thing in the morning to deputize Matthew before an audience of his classmates. With a police escort, Matthew then traveled to the St. John Sheriff’s Office, where he enjoyed getting a glimpse of life in law enforcement. Matthew spent time with Tregre in his personal office and visiting the 911 Communications Center, the Criminal Investigations Division and Patrol Headquarters.

He enjoyed working with K-9 officer Titus and riding in BearCat with the Crisis Management Unit. Tregre also treated Matthew to lunch, adding it was a pleasure sharing duties for a day with Sheriff Matthew.
