DESTREHAN — In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, the German Coast Farmer’s Market is hosting a “Growing of the Greens” celebration Saturday.

The program begins at 10 a.m. at the Market’s East Bank location on the grounds of Ormond Plantation in Destrehan.

The Rev. Monsignor Harry J. Bugler, former pastor of St. Charles Borromeo Church Parish and a native of Ireland, will extend an authentic Irish blessing on Market vendors and patrons.

To celebrate the luck of the Irish, “Grow Your Own Luck” clover seed packets will be blessed by Bugler and distributed.

It is hoped once the seeds have been planted in soil and begin to sprout, all will be blessed with an abundance of good luck, good cheer and good thoughts.

The celebration will also feature a special cooking demonstration by Chef Blaine Guillot beginning at 10:30 a.m. and live music by Blanche Newsome. All are encouraged to come out and sing a few Irish songs, support local farmers and vendors and pick up some Irish luck along the way.

Other highlights include BunnAgain Rabbit Rescue education, a petting zoo and animal adoptions, St. Charles Parish Library display, a used book sale and an LSU AgCenter Master Gardener advice station.

The German Coast Farmers Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon every Saturday at Ormond Plantation in Destrehan and from 2 to 5 p.m. every Wednesday at St. Charles Plaza in Luling.
