LAPLACE — A local woman charged with caring for eight children had to be rushed to the hospital Sunday after authorities said she suffered a negative reaction to the drug “Mojo.”
Terika Craighead, of LaPlace is facing six counts of child desertion, according to a release from St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff Mike Tregre.
Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence in the 1000 block of Whitlow Court in LaPlace at 5:38 p.m. Sunday to assist Acadian Ambulance Services with a 30-year-old female who was convulsing wildly.
The female, identified by authorities as Craighead, was taken to Ochsner Health Center — River Parishes after attending paramedics reported her condition was caused by ingesting synthetic marijuana, or “Mojo,” Tregre said.
Craighead was home with her two children, ages 7 and 10; a family member’s three children, ages 5-11; and a friend’s three children, ages 2-6, Tregre said.
Deputies notified the Department of Family Services of their findings.
Tregre said Craighead’s family member took custody of her three children and Craighead’s two children. Deputies notified the friend, and his three children were left in his custody.
“Upon conclusion of the investigation of the incident, deputies arrested Terika Craighead after her medical treatment and release from Ochsner River Parishes,” Tregre said. “Craighead was booked with six counts of child desertion for each juvenile under the age of 10 in her care. Her gross negligence left the children in a hazardous situation while she was getting intoxicated.”
Craighead was released Monday after posting a $15,000 bond.
Sgt. Dane Clement said Craighead was the only adult home watching the children, and a landlord notified authorities to her condition.
