LUTCHER — The Lutcher Bulldogs won their seventh state championship in 2015, putting together a 14-1 season. The St. James Wildcats completed an amazing turn-around from their string of 25 straight losses just three years ago, finishing 11-4 and as the state runner-up to Lutcher.
Both schools are well represented on this year’s Class 3A All-State Football Team selected by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.
Bulldogs senior linebacker Sully Laiche, who led the defense throughout the season, has been named the Outstanding Defensive Player. A Class 4A All-State selection the last two years and a three-time District MVP, Laiche had 108 tackles, including 78 solos, 11 sacks, four forced fumbles, a fumble recovery and total of 31 tackles for loss this season. In the championship game he finished with six tackles, one assist, two sacks, a forced fumble and four tackles for loss.
Other Bulldogs on the team are wide receiver Al’Dontre Davis, quarterback Jontra Kirklin and linebacker Ben St. Pierre.
In only his third year as head coach of the St. James Wildcats, Dwain Jenkins did what many may have thought impossible. He took a team that had gone 0-25 in the three years before his arrival to two quarterfinal appearances and the Class 3A state finals. Jenkins has been selected the 2015 Class 3A All-State Coach of the Year.
Wildcats players named to the team are linebacker Aquinas Steib and defensive back Jai Lewis. Wide receiver Arron McKenney received an honorable mention.
