High school volleyball is wrapping up for the season, but East St. John Coach Chelsey Lucas-Nicholas isn’t tucking away her equipment just yet.
She is the director for Louisiana Southern Swing VBC and try-outs are Sunday.
Southern Swing VBC is a girls’ volleyball organization open to any girl ages 8-18. No prior volleyball experience or knowledge is necessary, but girls who have played before will find it an excellent way to improve their skills.
Every age group will play in six to nine tournaments from January through April.
While each team will be limited to eight-10 players, there will be more than one team per age group if needed.
Try-outs will be held on Sunday at the East St. John High School gym.
Orientation and registration for 10U, 12U, 13U and 14U will be from 8:30 to 9 a.m. and assessment, placement, practice and try-outs from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Orientation and registration for 15U, 16U, 17U and 18U will be held from 1 to 1:30 p.m., with assessment, placement, practice and try-outs from 1:30 to 3 p.m.
A $50 fee, by cash or money order, will be charged to every player in order to participate.
Team practices will begin soon after try-outs. 10U- 14U will practice from 6 to 7:30 p.m. and 15U- 18U will practice from 7:30 to 9 p.m.
A schedule of practices and tournaments will be handed out at the startup.
Southern Swing VBC will not interfere with any sports at the girls’ respective schools and practices will be held twice a week.
Each player will be responsible for paying fees for insurance, uniforms, balls, tournament entries, facility rentals, instruction and coaches, along with a membership to USA Volleyball. Fees for the current season are $625 plus a $50 fee to USA Volleyball. The $50 try-out and startup fee is extra.
Every player must register with USA Volleyball by Nov. 30 in order to practice with the teams.
Coach Lucas-Nicholas wants everyone to know Louisiana Southern Swing VBC encourages families to have fun and a positive attitude goes a long way toward being a better player. Each player should encourage the successes that every athlete attains during the season.
Any questions concerning the organization should be directed to Coach Chelsey Lucas-Nicholas at 985-381-1163 or Craig Nicholas at 985-713-3181.
