St. John the Baptist Parish has experienced 3.3 inches of rainfall since 5 a.m. Sunday, parish leaders said.
With higher than normal water levels in Lake Pontchartrain and heavy rainfall, drainage is impeded and street flooding is occurring parishwide. Highway 51 from Interstate 55 ramps to Ruedock is closed to traffic.
The National Weather Service is predicting consistent rainfall Sunday, afternoon bringing approximately one half to one inch of rain per hour. St. John the Baptist Parish crews are working the weather event while also making preparations for the additional rainfall, parish leaders said.
Residents are asked to assist with cleaning catch basins in front of homes and clearing debris and tree limbs from yards and roads.
Residents are asked to report any emergencies, street flooding or other weather-related concerns by dialing 9 1 1.
Motorists should use caution when on the road and refrain from driving through ponding water
