EDGARD — The West St. John Rams (2-3) will kick off district play this week in Metairie against the Country Day Cajuns (5-0).

Coming off of a three-week losing streak, WSJ is anxious to pull off a win, coaches say.

“We are definitely ready to move forward,” Brandon Walters, WSJ head football coach, said. “We are identifying the mistakes today, through film, and then we’ll move on from there. We are going to try to correct those mistakes and keep moving forward. We definitely aren’t used to losing, and it leaves a really sour taste in everyone’s mouth.”

The Rams were victorious in their first two games of the season against St. James and Donaldsonville. Walters blames the last three games’ losses on poor execution.

“Execution has been our nemesis,” Walters said. “Just getting out there and executing what we do. We can play with anybody.”

WSJ fell to Woodlawn in Baton Rouge last week 28-21.

“The game was right there for us,” Walters said. “We were ahead. They had to come back and tie it up. Even until the fourth quarter it was 21-21.Then they made a play and we didn’t. It just comes down to executing what we do.”

Walters said he isn’t planning any major position shuffling for the Rams’ first district game.

“We have some guys out with injuries,” Walters said. “We’ll make some adjustments there, but nothing too major when it comes to positions.”

With both District 12- 2A teams looking for a win, Walters said he is taking notice of key Cajuns players.

“We know they have some key guys they like to give the ball to on offense, like No. 7 (Trey Harrell), who is a real good receiver, and No. 21 (Jase Griffin) is a real good running back,” Walters said. “They like to keep the ball in those two guys’ hands. “Adversely, both those guys also play on defense. Those are the challenges we are going to see on both sides of the ball, but we’re going to go after them.”

Walters said his team is eager to play like everyone expects them to — they are ready to win.

“It’s district time now, and we don’t have any room for any more mistakes,” Walters said. “We don’t have time for not executing. The guys are eager. It’s been a rough three weeks, but we’re still focused on our mission and we are going to work to get it done.”
