Having dealt with many people who are seeking help for drug addiction and other of life’s challenging problems, one might think after 35 years I would get used to the failures.

I realize that the Bible says many are called and few are chosen.

It also warns me that I’m only a messenger, others will water the seed, but only God is responsible for the results.

On occasions, I’ve related a few success stories that are exciting for me and the families involved. I do family interventions and, if needed, send the troubled person to a treatment center.

A few weeks ago, I met with a couple who were concerned about their son. I suggested he go to a 12-month Christian program in Florida.

Last week, the young man, age 23, agreed to accept the challenge, so Monday morning, he boarded a bus for Florida.

He was a little nervous about the bus trip and his commitment to a 12-month program. I really could understand, because he had never taken a trip by himself.

We prayed before the bus arrived, and I shared that five months ago I had directed another young man to accept the same challenge. He did, but after the five-and-a-half hour bus ride, he stayed at the place only two hours and decided it wasn’t for him.

Recently, the young man died of a drug overdose.

I attended the wake and spoke to his mother and grandmother.

Needless to say, they were devastated and thinking, “only if!”

I questioned if I could have done more. The bottom line is only God is responsible for the results. I must continue to plant the seed, pray for someone to water what’s been planted and accept the results, regardless of the outcome.
