Destrehan opens defense of District 6-5A title

DESTREHAN – Destrehan head coach Scott Martin commented before the season began that everybody would be gunning for the two-time defending District 6-5A champions.
The hunting season begins Friday night as the Wildcats host Thibodaux in the district opener for both teams. Both teams enter the game having splittheir pre-district contests.
Destrehan comes into the game off a 14-7 loss against Bonnabel. TheBruins limited the Wildcats to 123 total yards, including 82 on the ground, and did not give up an offensive touchdown. The Wildcats’ points came on a58-yard interception return by Lance Carter. Traun Smith led the way forthe Wildcats with 62 yards on 14 carries after catching two passes for 98 yards in the season opener.
Bonnabel scored on touchdown runs by Joey Gathright and Robert Walsh.
Walsh carried 18 times for 109 yards while Brock Singleton completed 8 of his 21 passes for 158 yards.
Thibodaux is coming off a 20-0 whitewashing of East Ascension after opening the season with a 36-31 loss to Carver.
The Tigers are led by their offense which returns senior quarterback Toranza Every. Senior running back Jermane Wagner leads the groundattack. Newcomers Jacob Gros, Travis Alleman and Matt Rozier provideprotection up front.
The defense is shaky with a host of newcomers. Junior defensive tackleJeremy Chaisson and senior linebacker Jason Kern lead the old guard on defense. Junior linebacker Blake Trosclair lead the newcomers.Destrehan blitzed Thibodaux on the road last year, 30-13. The Wildcatsgained 327 yards on the ground, with Russell Bickham gaining 156 yards, Traun Smith 73 and Kerry Wilson 51. Bickham scored three times, Wilsononce and the Wildcats tackled the Thibodaux punter in the end zone for a safety.
Destrehan is at home again next Friday against cross-parish rival Hahnville. Thibodaux returns home to play South Lafourche.
