RESERVE – Donriel Louis is going to have a busy first visit to the LSU campus Friday.

Louis, a junior competing in track for the first time since he was a freshman, qualified for the Class 2A state meet at LSU’s Bernie Moore Stadium in four events – high jump, triple jump and the 800- and 1600- meter relays – Wednesday afternoon at the Division IV, Region III Meet at Riverside.

Louis captured the regional championship in the triple jump with a jump of 44-4 1/2, edging out teammate Dehaven Duronslet who had an effort of 43-10 3/4. Louis added a second place finish in the high jump with a jumpof 6-4. Keith Crumpe won the title in the event by clearing 6-6 on hisfinal attempt.

“It feels good,” Louis said of going to the state meet for the first time.

“I’m focused on winning state and I’m real happy to be visiting the LSU campus for the first time. I’m going to work on my form in the high jumpand I think I’ll take it in state.”Louis was also the second leg of the Rams’ regional champion 4×200 meter relay team. The team of Arlando Comminie, Louis, Rysean Brown andJessie Jackson crossed the line in one minute, 30.67 seconds, beating outNewman. Newman came back to win the 1600-meter relay in 3:29.26 withthe Rams’ team of Donavon Pierre, Louis, Tremaine Nathan and Brown placing third in 3:35.13. “We came in focused,” Louis said. “We did what West St. John is capableof and that is winning. We have been trying to show teamwork and todaywe did it.”The victory helped the Rams to a second place finish at the meet with 90 points. Newman, led by Outstanding Field performer Adam Biderman, heldon to capture the regional title with 103 points.

St. Thomas Aquinas placed third with 77 points. Riverside tied with JewelSumner for fourth place with 45 points while St. Charles Catholic placed15th with seven points.

In addition to his second place finish in the triple jump, Duronslet also captured the regional title in the long jump. Duronslet had a best effort of21-8 1/2. Teammate Terman Howard qualified in the javelin with a third-place throw of 162-4.

Riverside’s Rhett Vicknair also qualified in the javelin, placing second with a throw of 164-7. Sumner’s Sedric Brumfield won the title with athrow of 167-1/2. Vicknair qualified as well in the discus, placing secondwith a throw of 148-8.

Biderman won the discus title with an effort of 162-1. Biderman also tookthe shot put, with a best throw of 56-10 1/4. St. Charles Catholic’s KennyOrdeneaux will be making his first trip to the state meet after placing third with a throw of 48-8 3/4.

“It feels good,” Ordeneaux said of qualifying for state. “I realized by goal.That was up there with my best throws.”Riverside’s Justin Dunn took the regional title in the pole vault, clearing the bar at 13-0. Newman’s Alan Davis was second with a vault of 12-6.In the track events, West St. John’s Brown won the title in the 400,crossing the line in 51.19. St. Thomas Aquinas’ Mike Deliberto was secondin 52.03.”It’s a good feeling to go back once again after placing fourth last year,” Brown said of the state meet. “My goal is to place second this year andgive it my all. As for last year, I was nervous. This year, it shouldn’t belike that. I should come up with a better time.”Comminie qualified in the 110-meter hurdles with a second place time of 14.61. Sumner’s Gary Smith edged him out at the end, finishing in 14.32.Teammate Abrom Johnson placed third in the 200 meters with a time of 22.83 to qualify for state. Newman’s Justin Seale took first in 22.09.St. Thomas Aquinas’ Brandon Schanzbach was named the OutstandingTracker performer after winning the 1600, the 800 and the 3200 meters.
