RIVER PARISHES PITCHERS SHINE – Senior pitchers Erin Hymel of Lutcher and Tanya Teague of Riverside were on their games during the tournament.

Teague struck out 17 while giving up three hits and a run against South Beauregard. She went to three balls on a batter just once and at one pointhad a string of 11 straight strikeouts.

Hymel allowed one run in the two games Lutcher played. She allowed atotal of six hits while walking six and striking out 21. In the playoffs,Hymel allowed just two runs in four games.

SOUTH BEAUREGARD LIVES UP TO NICKNAME – South Beauregard, whose mascot is the Knights, are also known as the Lady K’s. They lived upto that moniker against Riverside Friday, striking out 17 times against Riverside pitcher Tanya Teague.

THE HAND IS QUICKER THAN THE EYE – Abbeville went through a phantom warm-up before its game against Lutcher Friday, taking infield without a ball.

The Ladycats took out all the stops with head coach Mark Suire even pretending to drop a ball on a throw in before picking it up and continuing the practice.

First baseman Maria Romero ended the practice by overrunning the “ball,” going back to pick it up and then throwing it in.

GOOSE EGGS A PLENTY IN TOURNAMENT – Pitching dominated the tournament. There were 21 shutouts in the tournament, including seven 1-0 games.

South Beauregard defeated DeQuincy 1-0 in nine innings in the Class 2A championship game and did not allow a run in the tournament.

DeQuincy was coming off a 1-0 nine-inning victory over Ouachita Christian in the semifinals.

West Monroe also defeated Southwood, 1-0, in the Class 5A championship game and French Settlement defeated Oak Hill, 1-0, for the Class B championship.
