Leaping ahead – Bush leads ESJ to fourth at Liberty Track Meet

NEW ORLEANS – Chris Bush placed first in the triple jump and second in the long jump, helping East St. John to a fourth-place at the Liberty BankTrack Meet Saturday morning at Tad Gormley Stadium.

East St. John finished with 33 points. St. Augustine out-distanced thefield with 76 points, followed by Holy Cross with 38 points and West Feliciana with 35.

In the girls’ competition, East St. John tied with Karr for eighth placewith 26 points. Destrehan was 13th with 16 points. McMain finished aheadof the pack with 76 points, followed by Easton and Ehret, each with 46 points. Glen Oaks was fourth with 38 points and Baton Rouge fifth with 361/2.

Bush, who leads the metro area in the long jump and is third in the triple jump, won the triple jump with a jump of 46 feet, 10 inches. He took anearly lead in the long jump, jumping 22-1 1/4 on his first attempt.

Destrehan’s Damien Richard came back with a jump of 22-3 on his third attempt to take the event.

The Wildcats’ 800-meter relay team of Corey Bryant, Raynell Joseph, Chuckie Burl and Cornell Watkins, placed second with a time of one minute, 30.10 seconds running in the final heat. St. Augustine beat theWildcats to the finish line, finishing in 1:27.81. Watkins placed third in the 200 meters, finishing in 22.24. St. Agustine’sGerald Green won the event with a meet record time of 21.35. That time isalso the fastest in the metro area this year. Green also captured the 100meters with a time of 10.63.In the girls’ competition, East St. John’s Courtney Drayton placed third inthe javelin with a throw of 103-7. Teammate Tenisha Williams was thirdin the discus with a throw of 10-7. Kavonna Reese added another thirdplace finish for the Lady Cats with a throw of 34-5 1/4 in the shot put.

Destrehan’s Joevone Markey placed third in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5-0.

Destrehan’s Traun Smith, Carlos Eugene, Amanda Spivey and LaToya Breaux attended the meet but left early to compete in a meet in Mobile, Ala.

Smith leads the metro area in the triple jump and is third in the long jump. Eugene is second in the triple jump. Spivey is first in the high jumpand second in the triple jump while Breaux is third in both the 100 and 200 meters.
