LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic came away with a sweep against St. Jamesin River Parish Tennis League action Wednesday afternoon at Belle Terre Country Club.

The Comets defeated the Wildcats, 8-1, while the Lady Comets came away with a 7-2 victory.

In the boys’ competition, Keith Celestin moved up to the No. 1 spot for St.James and took an 8-3 victory over Kyle Masset. Jason Horzelski cameback to even the score with an 8-4 victory over Lee Granier in the second spot. Jared Lorio then put the Comets ahead with an 8-1 victory over SeanWebre.

Leading 5-3 in the fourth spot, St. Charles Catholic’s Steven Ramirezbroke Byron Keller’s serve to go up by three. Keller took a 40-30 lead inthe next game before Ramirez came back to tie the score at 40. Ramirezthen dropped a shot over the net for the game winner.

Keller took the next game with a cross court shot to the left line and went ahead 40-15 with Ramirez serving. Ramirez came back to tie it at 40 andthen got the match winner with a shot down the left side.

Kip Verbeek defeated Randy Granier, 8-3, and David Bergeron beat Derek Prichard, 8-2, to finish the singles matches.

In the girls’ singles, St. Charles Catholic’s Lindsay Trant and NicoleScontrino started things off with 8-2 victories over Jade Millet and Janie Reulet, respectively.

In the third spot, Monique Trepagnier jumped out to a 5-1 lead over Casey Simon before Simon came back to make it 5-2, knocking a shot down the right side to break Trepagnier’s serve. Simon then took her serve to makeit 5-3.

Trepagnier took the next game and then broke Simon’s serve with a shot to the back right corner. Trepagnier got the match winner on her next serveas Simon’s lob shot to the back left corner was just out.

In the best match of the day, Michelle Bedoya rallied from a 6-3 deficit against Eileen Becnel in the fourth spot to send the match into a tie- breaker. Bedoya went ahead 8-7 and then took the match with a backhanddown the right side which Becnel returned into the net.

The teams split the final two matches with St. Charles Catholic’s SheriaScaffidi defeating Christie Duet, 8-3, and St. James’ Elizabeth Bergeroncoming away with an 8-2 win over Lindsey Caulon.

In the first boys’ singles match between the Comets’ Masset and Horzelski and the Wildcats’ Celestin and Lee Granier, Horzelski sent a shot down the left line to give the Comets a 2-0 lead.

Celestin and Granier broke the Comets’ serve and then tied the match on a long return by the Comets. Masset put the Comets back ahead with a shotdown the middle and Horzelski eventually got the match winner at 8-3 with a cross-court shot to the left baseline.

Verbeek and Neil Oberoi defeated Webre and Keller, 8-5, and Chris Accuri and Michael Rollo edged Randy Granier and Prichard, 8-6, in the final two doubles matches.

In the girls’ doubles, Trant and Scontrino blanked Millet and Reulet, 8-0, and Trepagnier and Bedoya defeated Simon and Becnel, 8-3.

Duet and Bergeron won the final match by forfeit.
