SCC takes two from Lutcher

LUTCHER – St. Charles Catholic overcame lapses in its offense with astrong defensive effort to defeat Lutcher, 15-10, 15-12, in the District 6-III opener for both teams Tuesday afternoon.

St. Charles Catholic improved to 18-8 overall while Lutcher fell to 14-8.Both teams had outstanding defensive efforts. Lutcher’s Toni Riley cameup with 11 digs while Nicole Scontrino led St. Charles Catholic with sevendigs.

An ace by Sarah Weber started the Lady Comets on a 4-0 run to start the match. Lutcher came back to take a 5-4 lead on a kill by Keondra Robertsonand three Lady Comet errors.

St. Charles Catholic tied the match at 5 on its next serve on an ace byCristin Clement and went ahead on a kill by Clement. The Lady Cometsbuilt the lead to 10-5 a serve later behind an ace by Marci Martin. A dig byKatie Arcuri, a dink by Monica Arcuri and a kill into the left corner by Scontrino brought St. Charles Catholic to within game point at 14-7.Lutcher refused to go down, however, as Tiffany Griffin and Robertson came up with a block and Griffin pushed one over to make it 14-8.

Robertson followed with a kill to bring the Lady Bulldogs to within four.

But Clement got the Lady Comets the serve back with a kill and Scontrino followed with an ace for the game winner.

St. Charles Catholic went ahead 4-0 again in the second game behind adink by Clement and consecutive aces by Monica Arcuri. But like in thefirst game, Lutcher came back to take a 5-4 lead behind five Lady Comet errors. An ace by Candace Keller helped the Lady Bulldogs increase thelead to 9-5.

The Lady Comet rallied to pull to within 9-8 behind a kill by Clement. Aserve later, a kill by Weber tied the game and the Lady Comets went ahead on an ace by Katie Arcuri. A kill by Scontrino made it 11-9 before Lutcherused a timeout.

Kills by Weber and Scontrino built the lead to 14-10. Lutcher again rallied,pulling to within two on two Lady Comet errors before a Lady Bullodg error gave St. Charles Catholic the game winner.Martin led the Lady Comets with five kills and two aces. Weber added fourkills and two aces while Monica Arcuri had two aces. Scontrino had ninekills and an ace to go with her seven digs.

Holly Hymel paced the Lady Bulldogs with four kills. Robertson also hadfour kills and an ace.

“I am still pretty happy with the way we played,” Lutcher coach Denise Riley said. “We played well. We played good defense but a few unforcederrors got us in trouble.”St. Charles Catholic coach Michelle Dearmitt said it always helps to startoff district with a win.

“It takes some pressure off,” Dearmitt said. “Overall, our play wasalright. We had lapses in offense in spurts but our defense picked us up.”In junior varisty play, Lutcher defeated St. Charles Catholic, 15-4, 15-10.Jill Martin had six kills, four aces and three blocks.

Michelle Roussel had two aces and a dig while Lindsay Louque had three kills and an ace. Ashley Huguet had two aces while Kassie Waguespack andLacey Millet had one apiece.
