LULING – All bids were refused Wednesday by the St. Charles School Boardfor the ROTC buildings at Hahnville and Destrehan high schools.

Total budget for the projects was $430,000, however all bids came in at a higher price, with the low bid from Hi-Tech Services Inc. coming in at$550,000.

The other bidders included Active Construction Co. Inc., BonnevalConstruction, C.G. Favret Co. Inc., Civil Construction Contractors Inc. andGootee Construction Inc. High bid on the project came in at $1,001,517.The school board unanimously approved narrowing the scope of the project and readvertising for new bids to bring it back in line with the budget.

In other matters, the board also issued a proclamation to declare October as United Way Month for the public school system.

Last year, as United Way executive director George Williamson noted, $36,032 was donated through the school system to the annual fund-raising drive.

This year, Williamson related, the total goal is $1.2 million, which is 9percent higher than 1998’s goal. United Way of St. Charles Parish has beenboosting its annual goal each year by 8 to 10 percent, he added, which is twice the national average.

Williamson also introduced Ron Loving, the 1999 campaign chairman, to the board.

Also, the board approved for a second reading the Crisis Management and Emergency Response Plan Policy and also the sabbatical leave policy revision.

Board member Mary Bergeron said two cafeteria steamers, each more than 25 years old, need to be replaced, as parts needed for repairs are no longer available. This was approved by the board.In his regular report, Superintendent Dr. Rodney Lafon announced thecurrent enrollment in the G.E.D. program stands at 208 students, thehighest in its 45-year history.

Also, a Superintendent’s Forum is scheduled Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at Harry HurstMiddle School. Parents with Hurst, Schoeffner Elementary, New SarpyElementary and New Sarpy Kindergarten are invited to attend.
