RESERVE – With his team having to go three games to defeat Lutheran the last time the two teams met, Reserve Christian coach Mike Marix knew it would be a battle when the Gryphons came calling Tuesday afternoon in the Eagles gym.

Marix would not be disappointed as the Lady Eagles had to overcome a 12- 7 deficit in the first game before pulling away for a 15-13, 15-3 victory.

With the win, Reserve Christian evened its mark at 7-7 on the season while Lutheran fell to 0-13.

A dink by Summer Vicknair and a kill by Amber Schlesinger gave the Lady Eagles a 2-1 in the first game before a kill by Natalie Peperone put the Gryphons ahead 4-3. Reserve Christian went back ahead 5-4 on threeblocks by Renee Delaneuville.

A dink by Peperone put the Gryphons back on top at 7-5 before Ford tied the game with an ace. Lutheran then went on a 5-0 run behind four ReserveChristian errors and an ace by Cammie Morgan.

Reserve Christian rallied on its next serve as Delaneuville served two aces. After a timeout by Lutheran, Delaneuville delivered a kill to tie thegame at 12.

Lutheran went up by one on a Reserve Christian error before three Gryphon errors gave the Lady Eagles the game with Angie Tucker serving.

Reserve Christian took advantage of three Lutheran errors to take a 5-0 lead early in the second game. Delaneuville added two aces during the run.Lutheran pulled to within 5-3 on an ace by Lampo before the Lady Eagles started to pull away behind a dink by Mary Venus and a dig by Delaneuville, making it 9-3.

A block and a dink by Delaneuville made it 13-3. Digs by Tucker andSchlesinger brought the Lady Eagles to match point. Ford then dinked ashot over the net for the winner.

Delaneuville was the Lady Eagles’ top defender and added a game-high four aces. Vicknair and Schlesinger each had three kills for the Lady Eagles.Natalie Peperone led the Gryphons with four kills while Hope Finnorn provided top defense.

“We really played as an unit and cut down on the mental mistakes,” Marix said. “We stayed sharp, didn’t get into a lull and stayed hungry. “If we can put together this effort consistently, we can be successful in district and winning our first game in the state playoffs.”
