RESERVE-It was a very sweet homecoming for the Riverside Rebels as they romped to a 44-0 victory over the L.B. Landry Buccaneers. Like lastweek’s game against St. Charles Catholic, the Rebels were led by theawesome running speed and strength of running back Casey Remondet.
Remondet was all over the field, tearing apart Landry’s defensive line as he carried the ball 21 times for a total of 259 yards and four touchdowns.
The game came down to a classic battle between the Rebels’ ground game and Landry’s passing strategy. Riverside had 428 rushing yards as opposedto Landry’s 26 yards, while Landry has 79 yards passing compared to the Rebels 26 yards in the air. Unfortunately, too many penalties, four fumblesand three interceptions cost the Buccaneers their momentum, and they never seemed to overcome the setbacks. Despite good passing byquarterbacks Eric Everfield and Kevin Marigny, Landry was unable to turn any play into points on the scoreboard.
The Rebels got the ball first on their 29-yard line, and behind the running of Remondet and Brandon Delaneuville moved the ball 71 yards in seven plays for the first touchdown by Remondet.
The Landry Buccaneers got the ball back on their 15-yard line and moved it fairly well with a combination of passes and runs. Quarterback TerrolWilliams connected twice with tight end Antoine Carver, but they were forced to punt on their own 44-yard line.
Riverside started on their 20-yard line and ran it back to Landry’s 39 where Remondet fumbled and defensive end Joseph Tribble recovered the ball for Landry.
In the second quarter, Landry kept to the air for several plays and then tried a running play, fumbled the ball and linebacker Ray Cella recovered for the Rebels on the Buccaneers 14-yard line. Again, the running ofRemondet and Delaneuville rolled the team downfield, culminating in a 3- yard touchdown run by Remondet.
Landry was unable to convert on the next series of plays and Riverside took over on the Rebel’s 44-yard line. Four plays later, running back BrittWaguespack ran it in for one of his two touchdowns of the game.
After the kickoff, the Buccaneers tried to run with the ball, but Everfield was sacked by defensive end Sean Delaneuville. Landry punted, and threeplays later, Remondet ran 31 yards for his third touchdown of the evening.
On the next set of plays, Everfield completed two passes to Carver for 23 yards, but then the ball was intercepted by Rebel defensive end Scott Rivere on the Landry 46-yard line.
Seven plays later, Remondet ran 35 yards for his fourth and final touchdown of the evening, and that ended the first half.
Landry got the ball first in the second half but they were forced to punt on a fourth-and-seven situation. The Rebels ran the ball back to theBuccaneer 13-yard line, and wide back Jeff Roccaforte ran the ball into the end zone but the touchdown was taken back because of a holding penalty. Kaleb Mayes then kicked a 26 yard field goal to make the score37-0.
Landry was intercepted again on the next series of downs by defensive back Travis Fox. Two plays later, Riverside fumbled and Landry recovered.Even though the Buccaneers got three first downs on the next series, they never got close to the Rebel’s end zone, and were intercepted by linebacker Barret Gommel which ended the third quarter.
Riverside started the fourth quarter by sticking to the ground with running backs Delaneuville and Wagues-pack. Starting on their own 33-yard line, the Rebels moved the ball downfield and Waguespack ran it in for his final touchdown and the final score of the game.
Riverside travels to Houma next Friday to play Vandebilt Catholic.
