Lady Eagles take one of three in tournament

RESERVE – Reserve Christian opened its tournament on a high note, defeating the St. Charles Catholic junior varsity, before falling toCrescent City Baptist and Bethany Christian Saturday afternoon.

Crescent City went on to beat the St. Charles Catholic junior varsity andBethany (15-9, 15-11) to win the tournament title.

Reserve Christian opened the tournament with a 15-13, 15-8 victory over the St. Charles Catholic junior varsity. The Lady Eagles then lost toCrescent City, 15-11, in the first game and fell behind the Pioneers, 9-0, in the second game.

With the score 1-0, the Pioneers ran off eight straight points with Samantha Brown serving. Lindsey Reynolds had two blocks and Brownadded an ace to make it 5-0 before Reserve Christian used a timeout.

After the break, four Reserve Christian errors made it 9-0 before Amber Schlesinger broke the serve with a kill.

Three serves later, the Lady eagles broke through on an ace by Schlesinger and a lift call on Crescent City to make it 9-2. Crescent City came back onits next serve to build the lead back to nine on an ace by Kristy Doby. Akill by Christina Martinez would make it a 12-2 game.

Reserve Christian continued to battle back as a dig by Mary Venus started a 6-0 run. A dink by Schlesinger and three Pioneer errors made it 12-8.But Crescent City closed out the match two serves later on a dink by Doby and an ace by Jessica Martinez.

Schlesinger led the Lady Eagles in aces with one and in kills with five.

Shelly Ford was the team’s top defender. For Crescent City, Doby had fouraces and Stephanie Roniger six kills. Jaime Fleming was the Pioneers’ topdefender.

In the tournament’s final game, Bethany Christian defeated the Lady Eagles, 15-6, 15-12. Renee Delaneuville had two aces for ReserveChristian while Summer Vicknair had three kills. Angie Tucker was the topdefender.

The St. Charles Catholic junior varisty defeated Bethany in thetournament’s other game.

“I thought we played a really good first game against St. Charles catholicand then got laxed,” Reserve Christian coach Mike Marix, whose team’s record went to 5-7 after the tournament, said. “We played a really goodCrescent City team that challenged us last week and we came out flat. Weare still young and trying to jell. We are halfway through the season amdhopefully it will start to kick in before district.”Reserve Christian played host to Jehovah-Jireh Tuesday and hosts Lutheran tomorrow. The Lady Eagles defeated Lutheran on the road earlierthis season in three games, winning the last 17-15.

“They are going to be ready for us,” Marix said. “We better be ready forthem.”
