Bergeron places second at Players Championship

BATON ROUGE – Brett Bergeron, coming off his first overall title on the Gulf States Junior Tour, placed second at the Gulf States PGA Players Championship this week at Sherwood Forest Country Club.
Bergeron had rounds of 78 and 76 Tuesday and Wednesday to finish a shot back at 10-over par 154 in the boys’ 14-15 age division. Joshua Clementsshot a 77-76-153 to capture the division.
Bergeron will next compete Monday in the state qualifier at Pelican Point in Gonzales for the Independent Insurance Agency Tourna-ment in Houston Aug. 16-20.Mac Lee of Ridgeland, Miss. won the overall title with a 77-75-152competing in the 16-17 age division. Abbeville’s Nick Guidry placed firstin the division with a 77-78-155. LaPlace’s Steve Luminais shot an 86-86-172 to tie for 31st.
Andrew Loupe of Baton Rouge won the boys’ 10-11 age group with a 41- 41-82. And West Monroe’s Brandon Sullivan was first in the alumnidivision with a 79-85-164.
Baton Rouge’s Katie Kane recovered from a 91 in the first round to shoot a second round 77 to win the girls’ overall championship.
KELLY WINS BELLE TERRE JUNIOR TITLE – LAPLACE – Belle Terre Country Club concluded its 1998 Junior program season with its annual Junior Club championship Wednesday afternoon.
Phillip Kelly shot an 83 to win the 18-hole category, defeating Rion Poindexter and Andrew Coleman by three shots.
Dallas Spatz was fourth with a 96, followed by Richard Lienhop with a 99.
Sarah Aupied had a 105, Jonathan Aucoin an 116 and Blake Gillies a 122.
In the 9-hole division, Josh Thevenot was the champion with a 45. ScottLawless was seven strokes back with a 52 followed by Jon Staffen with a 54.
Ryan Roussel carded a 57 to place fourth with Allison Hartdgen next with a 60. Matt Flynn had a 64, followed by Mateusz Dabrowski with a 67,Mychek Dabrowski with a 74 and Jake Boudreaux with a 76.
Jason Graffagnino shot a 21 to edge out Jarrad Graffagnino by two strokes in the 3-hole division. Dawn Spatz was next at 24 with Jonathan Montzshooting a 39.
