LAPLACE – For a number of River Parishes athletes, the end of the 1998- 99 school year and American Legion play is not the end of their athletic careers. Because of their success of the field and in the classroom, anumber of them will be playing on the collegiate level courtesy of athletic scholarships.

Perhaps the athlete who drew the most attention from colleges this year was East St. John’s Greg Gathers. Gathers, an all-State defensive lineman,received offers from 23 universities before accepting a scholarship from Georgia Tech.

In basketball, the Wildcats’ Clement Carter was offered scholarships from eight universities and accepted one from Southern Mississippi.

West St. John teammates Torrian Thomas and Pendarvis Morris will bereunited at Nicholls State after both received full scholarships for football. Also being reunited are track standouts Niesha Green and CrystalStipe, both of whom received full scholarships for track at Mississippi Valley State. Joining them at Mississippi Valley is Reshonn Saul, whoreceived a full scholarship for softball.

Riverside basketball standout Quinton Terrio was the latest to sign, receiving a scholarship to play at Belhaven College in Mississippi. RiverParishes baseball MVP Joey Poirrier signed with McNeese State to play baseball. And teammate Casey Duhe received a scholarship to play baseballat Collin County College in Plano, Texas.

The Lady Rebels’ Tanya Teague, the River Parishes MVP, recently signed to play softball with Chipola College in Marianna, Fla. And Amanda Roussel,the Class 2A high jump champion, received a scholarship for track from Northeast Louisiana.

Also going to Northeast Louisiana is St. Charles Catholic’s KennyOrdeneaux, who received a football scholarship. Teammate John Price willjoin Morris and Thomas at Nicholls State on a football scholarship. Also,Wayne Stein is walking on the football team at Southwestern Louisiana.

Destrehan’s Marcus Bates is heading to McNeese State after receiving a football scholarship. Teammate Lance Carter signed with Nicholls State.Carlos Eugene is going north to Louisiana Tech on a track scholarship.

Amanda Spivey has received a scholarship to join the perennial NCAA title contender LSU Lady Tigers track program. And Kelly Neal has received aswimming scholarship to the University of Kentucky.

Across the river, Hahnville standout defensive back Karon Champagne is attending Southern Mississippi on a football scholarship.

The Lutcher softball team is sending four players to the next level. ErinHymel, Candice Millet, Katie Cashio and Jenee’ Weber have all inked scholarships with Southeastern Louisiana. Teammate Cindy Guidry hassigned to play at Okaloosa-Walton College in Niceville, Fla.

The Bulldogs’ Bradford Smith has received a scholarship to play football at Jackson State.

The St. James Wildcats football team had two sign with colleges this pastseason. All-State running back Chad Jasmin received offers from aroundthe country before signing with Clemson. Teammate Chad Smith signedwith Norfolk (Va.) State.Also from the River Parishes, Cornell Bazille of LaPlace, who prepped at John Curtis, signed with Memphis.
