HASBROUCK FIRST ALTERNATE AT USGA QUALIFYING – Leisl Hasbrouck, the youngest girl in the field, recently won first alternate honors at the USGA Junior Girls’ National qualifying held at Skyline Country Club in Mobile, Ala.
Playing against 15 of the best girls in the southeast (ages 13-17), Hasnrouck finished tied for fourth behind Arie and Narie Wongluckeit of Brandonton, Fla., and Jackie Beers of Biloxi, Miss.It was a learning experience for young Hasbrouck. Both Wongluekeit girlsare nationally ranked and attend the prestigious David Ledbetter Golf Academy.
“I learned I have to get stronger,” Hasbrouck said. “Although both girlswere about my height, they’re unbelievably stronger in the upper body than I am, resulting in 30-50 yards longer off the tee, and you know what length means in golf.
“The other area I need to spend more time at, and although I work at it I sometimes take for granted, is the short game. I’ve got to work harderthere. I watched one of the Wongluekeit twins playing behind me, and whenshe missed a green it seemed automatic she would make par.”Belle Terre head professional Bob Hasbrouck, Leisl’s father, backed up her statement and added, “I’m proud of her effort, (although if she had got it up and down a couple more times she would have qualified for the national event to be held in Maryland). She stayed with these girls, most who willbe going to college on full golf scholarships in the next few years. As firstalternate, all we can do now is wait for a phone call from the USGA hoping for an opening.”
