Scaff Brothers too much for Cretin Homes

METAIRIE – Schaff Brothers, which dominated the Second District East during the regular season, picked up where it left off as the district tournament opened, defeating Cretin Homes, 11-0, Wednesday at Bonnabel High School.

Schaff (17-1) would go on to defeat Grillot Co., 10-2, Sunday at Hahnvilleto advance to the championship game. Cretin Homes would be eliminatedby Otto Candies, 14-7, Thursday.

At first glance, Wednesday’s contest appeared to be a pitching duel as both teams went scoreless over the first 1 1/2 innings. But in the bottomof the second, Timmy Blanke and Paul Williams reached Cretin Homes starter Jason LaPorte for walks. Next up, Chris Bush hit a shot to shortstop and the force was made at second, putting runners on the corners.

Schaff Brothers starting pitcher Thomas Diamond then connected with a long fly ball to center field, scoring Blanke from third with the first run of the game. Bush then stole second and third and scored on an errantthrow to give Schaff a 2-0 lead.

Schaff Brothers found its offense in the third inning. Shawn Woodwarddrilled a shot back up the box for a single, stole second and moved to third on a ground out. Kenny Ford then hit a shot just inside the line scoringWoodward to make it 3-0. LaRocca then walked to put runners at first andsecond.

Blanke stepped up and lined a hard shot into right field for single, scoring Ford from second base. Williams followed with a hard shot up the boxscoring Blanke from third. Bush then hit another single to center, scoringWilliams from second base to make it 6-0.

Diamond kept up the onslaught with a single into left, scoring Bush. Nextup, Donald Rigand singled to the gap in right center scoring Diamond. Asingle by Woodward to right brought in Rigand with the seventh run of the inning.

Cretin Homes coach Frank Monica then went to his bullpen for Jason Rauch.

A home run by Carlos Velasquez over the right field fence made it 11-0 in the third inning.

In the top of the fourth, Cretin Homes could only manage a single through the box by Jason Gonzales, Cretin Homes’ only hit of the game.

Cretin Homes would go down in order in the bottom of the fifth as the game was called because of the 10-run rule.
