RESERVE — Destrehan entered Regala Park Wednesday determined to have no let down performance against a much improved East St. John team, and one that’s given DHS more than a few fits over the years when playing at home.
Indeed, Destrehan showed up to play. DHS won for the 10th time in 11 games, beating East St. John 15-1 in five innings by the 10-run rule.
DHS (26-6) batted around in the third, fourth and fifth innings to put the game away, stretching a 2-0 lead into the eventual 14-run final margin.
“We gave the guys that speech going in, that this was always a challenging game for us to play,” Destrehan coach Chris Mire said. “They give us a tough game every time we come here.”
Mire said he wanted to see a different approach from his batters than in the first meeting between the teams, a 7-4 win by host Destrehan.
“I thought we were too passive,” Mire said. “We sat back a whole lot and tried to draw walks. I thought we did a much better job of swinging the bat today.”
Lefthander Cole Martin earned the win on the mound, allowing one run on three hits. He struck out six and walked none.
Kohen Granier went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored. Brennan Breaud scored three runs and Louis Kieffer knocked in two more.
Destrehan took firm control in the third inning, scoring five runs beginning with Brandon Wild’s RBI single to right. Granier followed suit with one of his own after a Nathan Pilutti single.
Martin’s sacrifice fly made it 5-0, then Logan Krajcer made it 6-0 with an RBI single. Destrehan’s seventh run of the day scored on a wild pitch.
Ahmani Martin singled home a run in the bottom of the third, making good on Juan Marshall’s early double with one out, but Destrehan had more offense to come.
ESJ coach Matt White has headed a big turnaround this season, but hoped Wednesday’s would become a learning experience.
“I felt like we shut it down today, and that’s not the team we’ve been this year,” White said. “For our young players, you hope to learn, but also for our seniors. If you shut it down in life, that’s when you cause real problems for yourself. We’ll take it and learn from it.”
… we played extremely well (Tuesday), then we had this performance. Offense, defense, we walked people and made errors, you name it and we struggled. A top 10 team like Destrehan makes you pay for that.”
