Authorities said at 9 p.m. Saturday officers responded to a shooting in the 800 block of East Terrace Street in New Sarpy, where they located Warren Sanders, 28, of LaPlace lying unresponsive in a ditch.

According to witnesses, Sidney K. Smith, 22, of East Terrace Street confronted Sanders over Sanders’ interest in Smith’s girlfriend, who lived nearby. The encounter ended with “Smith allegedly discharging an unknown type handgun multiple times at Sanders, who died at the scene. A warrant for second degree murder has been obtained for Smith,” authorities said.

Captain Patrick Yoes said Smith turned himself into the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center Sunday evening. He was arrested and booked on the charge of second degree murder, Yoes said.

Anyone with information on the fatal shooting should contact The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office by calling 911 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-877-903-STOP. Callers do not have to give their name nor testify and could receive up to $2,500.
