LAPLACE – If jumping rope is a great exercise for the heart, then the students at LaPlace Elementary School have the healthiest hearts in St. Johnthe Baptist Parish.

Last week the school had a jump-rope contest to raise money for the American Heart Association. Students went out and got pledges anddonations for the charity, and in return they promised to jump rope for 30 minutes a day for a week.

Physical education teacher Jane Bozeman has been participating in this fund- raiser for the last eight years, and this year students jumped to a grand total of $2,300.

“This is the most money we have ever collected,” said an ecstatic Bozeman.

The heart association gave out trophies to the students who raised the most money. Fourth-grader Angel Hood got first prize for collecting $220; BlaineLewis, a first-grader, got second place by jumping rope for $210, and second-grader Christian Stewart leaped into third-place with $190.

Angel Hood said it was easy getting people to donate the money. And as faras jumping rope every day? “Oh, that was the easiest thing I’ve ever done,” said Angel with a big shrug.
