All of us have certain words that evoke images and bring us a smile no matter how bad our day is going. Some like to think about a week at the beach. For others itmay be the thought of the Christmas holidays. It may be a piece of music thatbrings back memories of happy times. The most magic word of all to me is”Thursday.” No other word in the English language has the magic that “Thursday”has.
It’s the day I know I can come home from work and have no commitments. It’s theone day in the week that I don’t have to carpool to gymnastics or go to choir rehearsal. Thursday is my night. It’s the night I can curl up on the couch after along hot bath and watch my favorite sitcoms and never even change the channel.
Or I can read a book I’ve been putting off because I couldn’t find the time to sit down and read. Or I can call my friends or spend special time with mygrandchildren. Thursdays are sacred to me. Ain’t nobody better mess withThursday.
Nothing can raise my shackles faster than someone trying to infringe on Thursday without prior permission. Sometimes I schedule something on Thursday myself, butit’s something fun. For instance, Thursday may be a good night to go ice skating inthe park or see a play or go out to a coffee shop with a good friend and just hang out.
We all need that time just to be ourselves. We can invite others in, but it will be ourchoice. We need to find space for ourselves to think our thoughts, to take care ofour inner needs, to chart our course for the future.
Thursday is that time for me. On Thursday I can choose to do anything I want or tojust be. At first it took practice. On Thursday I would look around and try to findsomething to fill the void. Now I no longer think about my time alone as a void.Rather, I think of it as an oasis…a time to pause during the week and refreshmyself in preparation for the work ahead.
The great part about Thursday is the magic is there for everyone. It doesn’t haveto be Thursday. It can be any time that we can claim for ourselves, any time thatwe are not wrapped up in the busy-ness of life. Even if it’s for just a few minutes aday we need to shut the rest of the world out and be with ourselves. It’s a greatplace to be.
