MT. AIRY – Johnny Clark Jr. of Mt. Airy is again turning heads at car showswith his lowrider bicycle.
“Twisted Fantasy,” the lowrider built by Clark and his dad, Johnny Clark Sr.,recently placed first in class at the prestigious World of Wheels competition at the Louisiana Superdome. The Clarks also won for Best Display. It is thesecond straight year the bike has won first place in the lowrider class at the show.
“It felt pretty good, winning two years back to back” Johnny Sr. said.”That’s what we had in mind going in, winning again.”The first place finish continued a successful season of show appearances for Twisted Fantasy. The bike won Top 100 awards at the Crescent CityCorvette Club’s Fifth Annual Car Show, the Eddie Benoit Benefit Show and the Frankie Ford’s Birthday Festival and Car Show.
The bike also won first place at the Men of Integrity show and was a Top 50 finisher at the Cystic Fibrosis Second Annual Benefit Show.
The Clarks made a few changes to the bike over the last year. A new twistedseat replaced the blue velour one and twisted wheels and cranks were added.
Decals of the bike’s name were also added to the mirrors on the handlebars.
Chrome was put all around the bike, including the handle bars and the wheels.
“Every year we go back, we try to make changes,” Clark Sr. said. “You haveto change up. You don’t want to go in there with the same things every year. They (the judges) look at that. So every year it’s been different.”Clark said it took about 12 hours to put the bike, a 20-inch Schwinn, together. Most of the parts are ordered from lowrider catalogs and comefrom California and Mexico.
The display print that accompanies the bike was airbrushed by Johnny McGee of Royal T’s in LaPlace. McGee also did the license plate on the rear of thebike.
The Clarks are currently preparing for the show season that begins in March and has shows almost every month until October. Clark said that the displaywill be changed up for next year but that the bike is complete. He added thatthey are planning on building another bike from the parts left over from the changes made to Twisted Fantasy.
